For SuSE linux, I built ide-scsi into the initrd.  I can't remember
the magic words for this in Redhat.

I then put a line in lilo.conf pointing to the ramdisk image:
ishi:~ # grep -2 initrd /etc/lilo.conf 
#
image = /boot/vmlinuz
  initrd = /boot/initrd
  root = /dev/hda7
  label = suse
