One should always compile amanda from source.  A lot of stuff gets 
compiled in, and it helps one figure out what's going on.

This is a common problem -- check FAQ-O-Matic (available via 
www.amanda.org).  Is there a .amandahosts file in the home dir of the 
amanda user on the client?  Or you may have DNS issues.
