An AIT1 drive would *just* fit in that budget. Of course, you'll also
need money for tapes, which ain't cheap (~$60 each), but you get 35GB
native capacity.
You could also look at DDS{3|4}, which is a bit cheaper. Note that
getting a tape drive to work with Amanda really means getting your OS to
talk to the tape drive.
