AIT-1 drives cost less than DDS-4 drives and hold 75% more.  Sony, the only
maker of DDS-4 drives, has said that they're the end of the line and to
AIT instead.  DDS tapes are quite a bit less costly than AIT tapes and the
drive price difference might not matter once you've got 30+ tapes.
I'd definately go with AIT instead of DDS myself.
