There really is no requirement, per se. You can even run amanda w/o a holding disk (it'll just take a fair bit longer). The holding disk simply serves to speed things along (by letting you stream multiple dump images to disk while putting one on tape). A good rule of thumb (if you can manage it) is to have enough holding disk space to fit your two largest disklist entries. That way you're guaranteed to always be able to at least be doing one dump to disk while you're also taping another fs. -- Joshua Baker-LePain Department of Biomedical Engineering Duke University
