1.13.18 (or better I guess) is recommended.

gcc2.3.3 is ancient.
I think tar requires something in the 2.95 range

dump should do the trick,
procided you have another machine (with dump) to read back 
Im not sure if solaris (sunos 5.X) restore can read SunoS 4 dumps.

You could always try using the tar (/bin/tar) that comes with sun,
but make sure you test before you rely on it l)(
