I don't think this is an amanda issue, since practically everything
fails with mtx. I can't even make the drive eject the tapes manually...

IIRC, that changer has 7 slots.  Shouldn't the slots be 1-7 or 0-6?
Maybe your changer.conf file needs adjustment.
