You don't want to use localhost.  It'll bite you.  But, yes, you need a 
file in $HOME of the amanda user called .amandahosts.  Each line is a 
machine name followed by the user allowed access from there.  So, e.g.:

localhost.localdomain   amanda

> WARNING: pc41: selfcheck request timed out.  Host down?
> Client check: 1 hosts checked in 30.205 seconds, 1 problems found
