Yes, you normally write the full address.  You may also add
an entry to the alias file. Both should work, if you mail system
is set up correctly.
For example, make sure that you have reply-able addresses.
Otherwise, many mailservers refuse to accept your mail (thank the
spammers for making things more difficult in life.) I had the same
problem, also with a host in South Africa, where my mail just
vanished into a big black hole.
Our network is behind a firewall, and I sent my mail with
sender "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" bypassing our normal mailserver
that normalises all addresses, but there was no MX record
for "hostname.my.domain", only one for "my.domain".  Instead of
bouncing with an error like "Access denied, no MX record found for
hostname.my.domain", I could watch my mail getting out through our
firewall, but it never got delivered, nor did it bounce.
