Martin,

What sort of output are you seeing in /tmp/amanda/changer*.debug (or
whatever it's called). Those can be useful files to look in.

My guess is that your drive isn't returning status data in a form that
amtape can parse, or something. I've had similar problems in the past few
weeks.
