What is a cruft file/directory? And why should I delete it?

The only file in the system with the name named.conf is /etc/named.conf. The
other cruft files/directories is placed in the root of /data/shared.

Running Amanda 2.4.2p2 on Red Hat Linux 7.1, / and /boot is backed up with
DUMP, /data/macback, /data/shared and /data/vmware with GNUTAR.
