That was my one shot at it.  ISTR there is a thread, fairly recent, about 
a similar problem with, I believe, chg-mtx without the zd.  There might 
be a clue in that.  But IIRC it about a much newer version of amanda than 
2.4.5 (that's really getting long in the tooth you know) Unforch for you, 
I'm running much newer amanda, 2.5.1p2-20070202 last night, and 
2.5.1p3-20070206 will be used tonight, with the FILE: tapedevice, and its 
been working quite well (so far).
