Now that I think of it, there is a feeling of deja vu...

Going through my mails to you back in September I see that
I was having the same problem. At the time, you asked me
to put inetd in debug mode and in the foreground, and somehow
things settled in. I just tried that again but to no avail.
But I've got 3 amanda backups running now so I'm not sure
if it's all that good to try this at this moment. On top of it
if I run amcheck with the patch you provided me the amandad
debug file just grows to GB in a few seconds!
