Yes, it certainly could have.

I suspect that just removing the .tmp files and continuing on with
usetimestamps=yes will get you back on track with no further problems.

Okay, that makes sense. My one concern is this: what if there is data in those .tmp files that's no longer on the client host? Is there no way to recover them so amanda can provide me with a backup of them?

(Note: in this particular instance, if the answer turns out to be, "No, there is no way," it's not catastrophic, but at this point I'm just curious for future reference.)
