A generic timeout waiting for ACK has lots of possible causes, as outlined in the wiki. But I can't see where "(too)" would come from. I know you've forwarded this error before, and I said the same thing. I can't find anything that would create such a message in Amanda-2.6.1. So yes, I think an upgrade is probably the best solution.
