Well I am a little red faced and I apologize to the group. 

I was using the preconfigured man pages which were causing me problems. 

I went back and set "--enable-manpage-build" and reconfigured amanda, which 
rebuilt the man pages from the xml files, and no the man pages seem to be 
working ok.

Again I do apologize.
