The default is not to span DLE across tape volumes, if it tried to write a second DLE to a tape and it didn't _ALL_ fit it would fail the DLE and write it to the next tape volume. Yes, this results in unused tape after the successfull DLE, but amanda does not rewind/re-write with another DLE, its a safety precaution not to back the tape up and try another DLE. I'm not sure what the default DLE to flush selection is, but because I want to get as much on a tape as I can I choose the setting "largest fit" and have been very pleased with the result.
