Amanda users,

We have been seeing a high I/O load on one of our boxes.

One of the things noticed by one of the other admins is that
what amanda is running gzip --best in the background.

I believe that GZIP utilizes CPU and does not consume disk I/O,
also the system is sluggish during non-amanda hours points to a
more systemic problem.

However I wanted to check how things worked. I'd guess that the
data flow looks like this, with index files for the dumps.

gtar -c TEE gzip (--fast) > work area > tape
          \ gzip -tf | gzip (--best) > index-file.gz

Do I have that right ?
Is there a switch for the compress type for the index files ?
Gzip is a CPU hog, doesn't use any disk I/O, does it ?

                                                thank you,

                                                Brian
