ERROR: /usr/bin/gzip exited with status 1

It restored 35 part, Did it restored the complete backup?
Run: amadmin DailySet1 find alu01.alumetal.local 'D:/Contract' 20120407112059
Did it list exactly 35 part?

I copied the dumped file (35GB) to a Windows system and tried to open it with 7zip, but it complained that it was not a zipped file

What kind of file is it?
run the 'file' command on the file

You can also try amfetchdump with the -l argument:
$ amfetchdump -l DailySet1 alu01.alumetal.local D:/Contract 20120407112059
The resulting file should be gziped file.

'dd' restore only only part, you must restore all parts (35) and manually 'cat' them to get the complete backup image.
