Yes, that would exclude all directories (or files) named ".gvfs",
anywhere in directory tree being backed up.  So that should work well
for you, since you (presumably) don't have any directories with that
name that you want to include in the dump.

The point of checking the index file is to make sure that all the
other files under /home/gene/ _do_ show up there -- i.e. that you
haven't excluded anything you didn't mean to....
