I'm working on upgrading to amanda v3.3.1. I thought I had read that one should update the backup-server first, and then the clients at will. Perhaps I made up the "at will" bit.
The server works fine at 3.3.1 The server is also a client; so it is at v3.3.1 too and this works fine. Other clients, at older versions mostly 2.6.1p2 (or p1), do not work. Maybe nobody but me expected them to work with a v3.3.1 server? The V3.3.1 server can backup the older clients fine (at least, on two test clients and two small DLE's). But the old clients cannot read the new backup files on tape. When I take a manual look at the files (using dd) I see that the backup file format has changed, so it seems obvious that old clients can't read it. This is the difference: OLD BACKUP, from V2.6. Tape label looks the same. File label: ----------------------------- AMANDA: FILE 20120524200008 nodename.xx.yy /export/home/tez lev 1 comp .gz program /usr/pkg/bin/gtar NEW BACKUP, v3.3.1. Tape label seems the same. File label: ------------------------------------ AMANDA: SPLIT_FILE 20120525164533 nodename.xx.yy /export/home/tez part 1/-1 lev 0 comp .gz program /usr/pkg/bin/gtar Seems obvious that older amanda cannot recognize the new line that talks about "SPLIT_FILE" and "part 1/-1" Is there anything I can do on either old clients or new server to make them work together? Or do I have to update the clients in order to restore from newer backups? Restoring older backups from my v3.3.1 client (the server itself) seems to work fine.
