PS - I should add that I tried adding specific splitting parameters to the tape
specification:

define tapetype DellPV124-DLT4 {
    comment "Created by amtapetype; compression disabled"
    length 824601472 kbytes
    filemark 0 kbytes
    speed 97034 kps
    blocksize 32 kbytes
    part_size 80G
    part_cache_type disk
    part_cache_dir "/export/amanda/splitcache"
    lbl-templ "/var/lib/amanda/example/label-templates"
}

The amvault command is called with these parameters:

-otapetype="DellPV124-DLT4"
--dst-changer robot
--label-template EECS-VAULT-\%\%\%

and then a list of the most recent level 0's computed by a simple script.

Amvault itself still fails with:

Wrote EECS-VAULT-033:78: split dumpfile: date 20121127133413 host
castor.eecs.utk.edu disk /export/home/5 part 1/UNKNOWN lev 0 comp cust program
APPLICA
TION server_custom_compress /usr/bin/pigz
transfer failed: No space left on device, splitting not enabled

The debug output still ends with:

method "status" on an undefined value at /usr/share/perl5/Amanda/Changer/
robot.pm line 1527.

If anyone knows why robot.pm fails, I'd appreciate it. I have successfully used
this tape library in a previous setup using amanda 2 and I have a different
PowerVault 124 (with an LTO-3 drive) in another amanda 3 setup that works fine.

Thanks all,

Markus
