Have you tried making  "etimeout"  a bigger number,  in the 
amanda.conf   file?

As the disk space gets more and more full,  the time to do the estimate
grows.    I've got  etimeout set to 2000  because of a really large disk
in my past.   Don't know if I still need it,  but it hasn't hurt anything.
