Sounds to me as if your user "backup" isn't member of group disk or so.

amdump succeeds? Ok, then this might be your issue.
I understood amcheck AND amdump fails.
Some people add the backup user to groups disk AND root, but this isn't
optimal in terms of security (but might get you out of that error message).
