I think this holds the key to at least some of your problems, but unfortunately
it's hard interpret because of the text substitutions you did.... Can
you repost with the actual output? (We especially need to see the
"[retention-XXXX]" indicators.)

Also, what does "amadmin <CONFIG> retention" show? This will present
similar information as the "amtape ... inventory" command, but pulled
from the tapelist file rather than the tape-drive inventory.

In another email you mentioned your config had:

        dumpcycle 1week

        runspercycle 7

        tapecycle 21

Am I correct you have a total of 22 tapes (0 through 21)?

(Also, am I correct you do not specify a "runtapes" value at all? I am
assuming the default value of 1 for runtapes for the discussion below.)

Having a tapecycle of 21 tells Amanda that you want to keep 21 tapes
with "active" dumps on them. If you do have 22 tapes labeled, that
means that once you've written to all the tapes, you only have one
"spare" to work with at any particular time. Normally you would want
to have the number of volumes in active rotation be at least several
more than the tapecycle setting so there's some leeway in your
rotation.

For example, note here that your dumpcycle of 7 will cause Amanda to run
a level 0 for each DLE at least once every 7 days... but with a
tapecycle of 21 that will mean that (essentially) you are insisting on
keeping at three level 0s for each DLE before you start overwriting
tapes.

If you are doing that on purpose, you just add another few vtapes to
your changer to avoid running out of volumes... or if 22 vtapes seems
right, you could just reduce your tapecycle to 14 (for example). Amanda
will still only reuse a tape when it comes around in the rotation (based
on the taperscan algorithm), so normally it will still have 3 copies of
full dumps for each DLE... but it will go ahead and overwrite that tape
from 21 cycles ago (rather than refusing to run) if that tape
happens to be the next one available.

(For what it's worth, the production backups at my site uses 21 vtapes
with a tapecycle of 14.)

(Anyway, the point of the inventory and retention commands mentioned
above is to show the exact result of Amanda's retention-calculations on
each of the available tape labels....)
