I've always done all the configure, build and install from root, using the --with-user=amanda and
--with-group=amanda in configure. Then all my backup and administrative operations are done as user
amanda. No problems going back 15 years or so.

Is this actually still true? I always configure and build and install as root.
My backup account is OPERATOR though, so that could be why I’ve had no trouble?
