At the risk of being too simplistic:  which entry or dumptype is NOT using tar,
but is using regular DUMP?  Did you try to add an exclude file to it?
Only TAR can cope with exclude files.

Or, is TAR not available on node XYZZY  so it is defaulting to DUMP?
