Thanks for the response Mark.  I ran amavisd manually and provided the
config files that Debian likes to define in a conf.d/ directory.  When it
ran, I got an error saying that the user could not be changed from 0 to
root and output the http://www.ijs.si/software/amavisd/#net-server-sec url
and a message about upgrading Net::Server.  I went ahead and used the -u
parameter and the amavis user that debian created and everything spun up
just fine.  Aside from making several changes to the 30-user config file
to uncomment the $path and other variables, everything seems to be running
just fine.  Perhaps the init.d script is borked somehow.  I wonder how
things got that way.  I'm contemplating going through the script to figure
out what's screwy with it, but I guess I'll be starting (and restarting)
amavisd-new manually from here on out.
