It could be that some mail content is causing long processing time in file(1). Try running the 'file' command on files found in one of your preserved directories, such as: /var/spool/amavis/amavis-20051225T222829-27727/parts/ Make sure to do this as user vscan (amavis). See that you have a fairly recent version of file(1).
