So, apparently it's not the amavis master process that consumes
memory, but a child and the (04697-04-2) tagged process.
Well, tell us what rules you've loaded? Maybe ye olde bigevil ??
This takes a LOT of memory
On the other hand, those two processes aren't using 38.1 + 38% of the
memory but something a bit over 38% together probably since they're
also using shared memory which top cant distinguish from non-shared

Yep, I'm loading all the "evil" ones.. :)
However, I've narrowed it down, it isn't amavis that's the problem,
it's SpamAssassin...

You'll need to setup surbl, its way faster and less memory hungry !!
This will probably save you a couple of 100megs....
