Ah ha!  turns out that LDAP wasn't a red herring afterall.  I looked back 
through what had been emerged since amavisd was first started and I discovered 
that nss_ldap-253 came down on the 2nd.  I've had problems with nss_ldap > 
239-r1 in the past, so I masked the new version and re-emerged nss_ldap.  Voila!
