Thanks for getting back to me,

You are correct i am running chrooted but the syslogd does offer its  
socket up in the chroot jail.  (in my rc.conf.local i have  
syslogd_flags="-a /var/amavisd/dev/log") and this as worked fine until  
this install. In any case i will focus on that is where the problem is  
coming from and see if i can track it down.  I also changed from  
OpenBSD 4.3 to 4.4 so maybe something change in there as well.
