Yes I suspect so - but I think that funding is influential in whatever your endeavour. Mine is audio work and audio publication, I am involved in a couple of event and publication projects at the moment which engage directly with space and venue - one is a squash court, squash is very specific but my experience is general: in trying to organise this it is a matter of money wrangling, venue hunting and eventually for the CD distribution seeking, not to mention work making a creative curating. Although the works have digital origination they will manifest in a physical event, a CD publication as well as a website. I think that this is often the case for projects that use media technologies they have a physical manifestation in the form of an event or exhibition. In terms of the question I suspect that work gets made where it is possible to make it - from a bedroom computer or an open access centre to a pay-up state of the art facility depending on budget. I think the issue is more how it is shown/engaged with and distributed - at least that is the issue for me as I have the luxury of my own facilities and some time to use them. However in terms of making an edition or event (or releasing your time for this work) this requires money which is sought after from whatever funding bodies seem appropriate heres where I come back to the question perhaps these digital facility/exhib. locations mentioned by Chris have three roles of support one is in providing the facility the second might be in providing a recognisable context for this kind of work, recognisable as a venue that attracts an audience and makes a focus and the third is as institutions that lend credibility to projects when they try to scrape funding together. Distribution of audio is a difficult one, I would be interested to see any examples of websites with sound work that people can recommend.
