New Media works wanted for touring exhibition by City Gallery, Leicester. subject: shoes! Shoe will be a national touring exhibition originated by the City Gallery, Leicester, which will explore the role of the shoe in contemporary culture, through the use of contemporary design, craft and visual art. The exhibition will take place at the City Gallery from 19 July - 24 August 2002. >From the City Gallery it will tour to the McManus Galleries, Dundee and the Ruthin Craft Centre, North Wales. A tour of English venues is currently being scheduled.
Shoe will take an innovative approach to the subject of fashion and design accessories, focussing on the wearing of shoes as diverse forms of social ritual and practice, performances that elicit responses and codify mesages, communicating different signals to different groups. Exhibits will traverse different areas within contemporary visual art, design and craft including installation and lens-based media. Shoes function not only as everyday objects but as collective symbols, and Shoe will tap into our collective imagination to explore the role of the modern shoe as an urban accessory for our times. Images of the city at night, neon lit pavements glistening with rain, with the tap, tap, tap of high heels advertising the imminent arrival of the modern heroine, resonate within urban mythology. Knife edge stilettos have turned the contemporary femme fatale into a controversial feminine ideal, both an incarnation of a culture in movement and a dark image of precarious desires, a focus for subterranean anxieties about gender, identity and urban rootlessness. Meanwhile in a age of urban dislocation, the high-tech trainer has transcended the sphere of leisure, to become a futuristic metaphor for the migrational and poetic negotiation of urban space. Shoe will explore the territory of these modern myths, and explore the fashion accessory as a vehicle for our projected fantasies, spiky heels, biker boy zips, leather straps and patent leather will all be examined as signifiers of desire and investigated as tantalising aspects of the urban uncanny, fetishitic carriers of noir narratives.
