This exciting programme of international short films - curated by award winning film maker and BSL student Matt Hulse - has been selected primarily from the 6th Deaf Film & TV Festival (Wolverhampton) and the Festival of Cinema for the Deaf (Chicago), but will include relevant and important works from other key short film festivals such as Oberhausen (Germany), Impakt (Holland) and Ann Arbor (USA).

The drama, animation, documentary and experimental films have been made by deaf film makers or are specifically suitable for a deaf audience, but will be equally accessible to the hearing - and those who consider themselves interested in innovative, contemporary film making at its very best!

The programme will include:

  • Remark! productions spoof 'Reservoir Wolves'. Originally shot in BSL. Newly captioned for an international audience.
  • Vita Gotlieb's 'Metronome', a film about a deaf pianist.
  • Bim Ajadi's 'Queens's New English'. BSL for the MTV generation?
  • Mike Hoolboom's haunting 'In My Car' from Canada.
  • Malcolm Venville's exquisite 'Silent Film'
  • Sam Dore's 'Chronic Embarrassment'. Lightning-fast razor-sharp BSL lampoons the common preconceptions of the hearing world!
  • Virgil Widrichs stunning Oscar nominated Copy Shop

Following the screenings there will be a Q&A with the filmmakers and presentations by other key deaf and hearing figures in the media industries. BSL interpreters will be available and all films captioned where appropriate.

The Filmhouse bar will be available for unresolved discussions that arise from these talks.

The programme may not be suitable for children under the age of 12.

OK, so that's the press release ... a few more words from me ...

I'm hoping that we may also have a bit of a 'coup'. Rachel Seiffert - Booker Prize & Orange Prize Shortlisted author of 'The Dark Room' - has agreed in principle to write something specifically for the event which will be screened as a silent, text-only film. Her background is originally as a film maker in Glasgow, so this could be very interesting!

I am myself in the process of making a film with a deaf film maker from Bristol (Sam Dore) which will be a SIGNED version of the Pistol's 'GOD SAVE THE QUEEN' - to coincide with the Golden Jubilee which falls on the Monday after the event. Needless to say, it's also a great chance to play the track VERY LOUD INDEED.

I hope to see some of you there!

Please forward to interested parties!

Matt
