Dear Andrew et al

Noted your interest in developing geographic/art
>thinking perhaps usin GPS/GIS.
Keep an eye on what the audioguide companies are doing. My own company's
partners, RSF, of Toulouse, and Linon,Germany (of the infamous Plastination
show) have developed a GPS feature for their product range. The obvious
application for this is outdoor sites such as archaeological parks or parks
integrating/displaying artworks so that not just simple narration but
interactivity takes place in close proximity to the object/feature in the
landscape. In terms of applying to art projects, we are at an early stage
although we are always open to ideas.

I and my colleagues will be demo-ing this feature along with AV
synchronisation at TiLE in Berlin (11 to 13th June).

Robbie

yes agreed. shame. however...
as a follow up to my posting at the start of the month,
for anyone was interested in the earthquake-sound research and approach...

http://www.gmd.de/projects/auditory-seismology/
http://www.acoustics.hut.fi/icad2001/proceedings/papers/dombois.pdf
http://www.khm.de/news/per_SON2002/per_SON_e/speakers.html

i hope you, the reader, maybe be interested in this project as media theory
(expouted by McLuhan is one of the references- see section 1.2 On Eye and
Ear in .pdf) and sense aesthetics are applied to the scientifitic analysis
context.

The research paper was written for ICAD (auditory display) and so for the
(computing/interface/sound interpretion)science research community.
For anyone who is not familiar with research paper formats and 'language',
it may be of interest to see the presentation method of concept,
however i include a link [per_SON2002] which was a conference recently in
Cologne, which aimed to bring together science/sound aesthetic crossovers.
Other than Dombois, there were some interesting speakers which approached
the subject quite laterally, who some of you may want to look into further.

this sounds like a nice monthly topic.....
it would be of interest (at least for myself) to expand what this might mean
and include,
considering the easier availability and improving quality of GIS/GPS,
...how may the now traditional conception of 'land art'
may be reconfigured by this new technology?

all the best
andrew
