Dear all, Don't forget Saturday night at the Free Gallery. Artists talk @ 6pm, opening from 7pm. Details below in English and French.
hope to see you there Lucy and Amy E merge D presents : Parlour : Free Gallery, Parnie Street, Glasgow : 14th December 02 to 13th January 03 : opens Saturday 14th December 7pm : artists talk Saturday 14th 6pm with craig PELUSEY : featuring mark MELVIN (Glasgow) sylvaine CHASSAY (Paris) : the art work shown in this exhibition has been created in response to the gallery, which also functions as a therapeutic clinic : mark MELVIN, a graduate from Glasgow School of Art in June this year, works predominantly in video. Inspired by music, especially, American Minimalist music, he employs a tactic of repetition, creating artwork through process-based investigation. He uses found human gesture and cacophonies of sound to inform his creative process employing rhythmic iteration and mimicry. MELVINs work alternative therapies, is being made in reaction to the idea of alternative therapy and self-restyling. Questioning how we view individuality and strive for originality in a world dominated by repetition. Using his own image, he will create his own therapeutic art works establish an experience for the viewer that exists very much in the present and is grounded in reality. By deferring any real meaning or conclusion to the processes used in these pieces, MELVIN will provide an interface for the viewer to interrogate their own quest for individuality. : sylvaine CHASSAY lives in Paris but hails from Montreal. CHASSAYs work approaches modern communications with an intelligent yet powerfully human empathy, realised using lo-tech methods. Non-verbal communication takes on many guises in our globalised society, but rarely do we stop to look at how we manifest that communication, be it through a text message or a physical gesture. The works that have resulted from CHASSAYs previous enquiries, vary from large scale photography to direct interaction with the public. parlour/ parloir sees CHASSAY researching the treatments available at the Free Clinic to contextualise her work with web smileys ; a form of communication becoming increasingly absorbed in to language systems across the globe. Coordinator of the expressions quest, CHASSAY will lead the players through the surrounding area in a pursuit of graphical emotions directly linked with the body feelings. The winners will be furnished with a set of happy smileys; another way to remember that smiles are great. Please join us at 6pm on Saturday 14th December, when MELVIN and CHASSAY will be in discussion with craig PELUSEY. PELUSEY is an Australian artist currently living in Edinburgh. He has a strong background in contemporary art and criticism and graduated from Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia. PELUSEY also attended the Ecole Nationale Superior des Beax Art, Paris, France and has exhibited in Glasgow as part of Public / Private at the Mansions Caf. The talk is free and open to all and will be followed at 7pm by the opening of the exhibition, which runs until January 11th 2003.
