Since 2001, the Whirl-Mart Ritual Resistance phenomenon has spread from upstate New York across the United States and now across the Atlantic. Consumption awareness rituals are being performed on every Sunday of January by independent teams of Whirlers in the UK, Germany, and the US. During a Whirl-Mart event, a group of people gather and perform a not-shopping intervention in a cathedral of consumption, such as Wal-Mart, Toys R Us, or Asda. The group creates a whirling train of empty carts as they meander through the aisles of the store. The dates locations for January Whirls are...
