Announcing the introduction of the
MA in Creative Music Technology at
Bath Spa University College

Start date: September 2003 (subject to approval)

This new initiative is designed to build on the success of our undergraduate
course, which has rapidly become one of the best known in the country. Like
the undergraduate course, the MA will be primarily composition-based and non
genre-specific, spanning commercial and avant-garde styles and approaches
whilst remaining focused on a creative and experimental approach.

The course will be most appropriate for those with a thorough grounding in
music and technology whilst catering for a wide variety of backgrounds and
interests. It is designed for those who wish to undertake advanced-level
study in the field, and follow their own interests to explore particular
areas in depth. It will be offered in several modes to provide maximum
flexibility full-time, part-time and shorter PGCert, PGDip and
single-module modes.

In full-time mode, the course will run over three semesters, September to
September. The first semester will give a thorough grounding in research
methodology, and offer a toolkit of optional skills-based projects designed
to allow students to top up on specific technical skills and knowledge as
required. The second semester will feature two modules built around the
crossover of music technology into other fields, specifically performance
and multimedia. Interactivity Lab is an in-depth exploration of live
electronics, laptop electronica and interactive interface design, while
Advanced Multimedia considers the role of music technology in an era of
media convergence, the aesthetics of visual music and a variety of enhanced
multimedia formats. The third semester is research-based, with students
undertaking an individual Major Project which will allow them to explore a
chosen area in depth.

Under the direction of Dr Joseph Hyde, the MA will also benefit from the
wide range of experience covered by the CMT team, spanning such areas as
composition (across electroacousic, computer music, sound/sonic art and
loop-based electronica), multimedia (video, animation, interactive),
installation and performance-based work, and technologies such as
Max/MSP/Jitter/nato, PD/GEM, VNS/iCube, Final Cut Pro/Director/Flash and
more mainstream music technologies.

The CMT course runs in the School of Music and Performing Arts, alongside
Music, Commercial Music, Dance, Drama and Performing Arts programmes. The
school has excellent facilities and a vibrant research culture with
research-active staff and a number of research students. The CMT MA will
share a well-resourced facility with the MA in Interactive Multimedia.
Located in the Bath School of Art and Design, the facility will provide an
exciting context for advanced collaborative work. Another key feature of
the course will be a collaboration with the Watershed Media Centre in
Bristol, which will foster links with Bristols vibrant New Media culture as
well as providing a public forum for outcomes from the course.
