Dear Colleague,

I am writing to you to outline a unique opportunity for a Research Fellow with a distinguished international reputation to come to work in the Digital Media Centre (DMC) at the Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland. Funded by Science Foundation Ireland, the Fellows Research Professorship programme will provide funding of 500k per annum for five years to an institution for the support of an individual, research team and research costs.

The DMC has been acknowledged as a leader in digital media content research and technology in Ireland. The Centre offers a dynamic structure, creating links between academia, industry and the public sector; cross-fertilizing education and industry; supporting industry with academic skills and knowledge; and supporting education with industry market intelligence and resources. This expertise is based upon the effective harnessing and integration of academic, creative and technological skills, across DIT's acknowledged strengths and expertise in the visual, performing and media arts, computing and engineering.

The DMC brings together four inter-related activities: research, advanced education and training (Masters and Doctoral programmes, and professional training), consultancy, and experimental creative production. In addition, the Centre encourages and supports emerging entrepreneurs. Current research concentrates on four key themes:
- Virtual environments for cultural heritage and education;
- Concepts of interactivity and interaction design;
- New forms of open and distance learning ('eLearning') for education and industry;
- Application of mobile and broadband systems and enabling technologies to deliver even richer content.
The DMC research portfolio includes national and EU funded projects, with a total value in excess of 1.5m, in addition to industry funded projects. Recently submitted proposals have a potential total value of 1m.

Currently, DIT is leading a bid proposal, entitled CACHE (Communities of Ambient Heritage and Culture), for an EU Framework 6 project of over 40 partners under the Information Society Technology Programme. The potential value, over five years, is approximately 10-18m. The CACHE research agenda is wide-ranging reflecting the diverse interests of the network. Six key areas define the spectrum of research proposed - each of which is specifically focused on the cultural heritage domain:
- capture technologies,
- knowledge technologies,
- interface technologies,
- visualization and display technologies,
- location-based and spatial technologies, and
- socio-economic aspects and business modeling.

Underpinning our activities is a particular strategic vision focused on developing a Centre of Excellence in the Digital Hub - an Irish government strategic-priority area with broadband connectivity. The DMC's initiatives are supported by Enterprise Ireland and Dublin City Council. For further information see: http://www.dmc.dit.ie/.

I am very anxious to talk with anyone who would be interested this exciting new opportunity for research in Ireland or knows of someone who might be interested. Further information is available at http://www.sfi.ie/content/content.asp?section_id?9

I await hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Dr Ellen Hazelkorn
