As the European Research Partner of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab, Media Lab Europe's approach to innovation provides a unique environment to explore advanced research and applications (across digital technologies) with no regard for the traditional divisions among disciplines. In tandem, its intentional focus on partnership with industry, academia and governmental organisations reflects the lab's commitment to collaborative research, to the creation of technologies and possibilities that have barely been dreamt of before and to the transfer of research results and applications out of the lab into worldwide use Media Lab Europe is currently pursuing three broad areas of research activity and interest: C-sense, (common sense): enabling people and machines with the models and meanings behind knowledge and understanding. D-sense, (distributed sense): creating peoplecentered applications that run "outside the box", across wired and wireless networks. E-sense, (extended sense): creating interfaces to technologies that are akin to our natural senses: i.e. intimate, scalable, and selective.
