Better than TV and pubs any day.

MARGARETTE'S FEAST will be shown at the Glasgow Film Theatre today, Monday 7th July at 18.30h.

The Deaf Focus Film Festival is delighted to announce that Renato Falco will be in attendance at the Scottish preview screenings, and we are immensely grateful to him for honouring our festival with his beautiful and uplifting film.

MARGARETTE'S FEAST Directed by Renato Falcao 2002 90' (Brazil)

a Filmik-POA/Filmik-USA production | production manager: Dimitre Lucho | executive producer: Regina Datria | director, cinematographer, editor: Renato Falco | music & lead: Hique Gomes

Full of humour and affection, MARGARETTE'S FEAST is a vivid and sometimes darkly surreal portrait of life on the fringes of Brazilian society. Pedro lives with his wife Margarette, children, a grandmother and countless other relatives in a remote house in the south of Brazil. He dreams of giving a large birthday party for Margarette, but can only just make ends meet. When Pedro is sacked, his dream falls apart. But his redundancy payment comprises a suitcase and a bag of money. Despite all the financial excesses that Pedro overindulges in, the bottom of the suitcase never seems to come into sight ...

Renato Falco has created a story with a unique style which pays direct homage to such classics of silent cinema as LA QUIMERA DE ORO and THE CABINET OF DOCTOR CALIGARI. Possessed of a rare visual talent which enables him to tell the story of a life tormented by the caprices of fate without recourse to dialogue, and supported by an uplifting score from the film's protagonist and composer Hique Gomez, Falco has taken a huge risk. In an age when the faith and expectation of the spectator is placed in the words which flow from the screen, he gives precedence to other powerful elements in order to convey the feelings and actions of his characters. Using pantomime, lively Brazilian instrumental music, signs developed through improvisation and occasionally slapstick, he gives a modern interpretation of the classic genre.
