CALL FOR PAPERS - ‘VISUAL CULTURE: EXPLORATIONS’

Lancaster, UK
Visual Studies at the Department of Visual Arts, University of Pretoria,
invites submissions for an international conference to be held at the
University of Pretoria, 9 10 July 2004.
Contemporary and historical papers that explore aspects of the visuality of
culture from a variety of critical vantage points will be considered. The
main aim of the conference is to explore the ontology and practice of Visual
Culture Studies in relation to the broad themes given below.
Submissions are invited from Visual Culture Studies, Cultural Studies,
Cultural History, Art History, Tourism and Leisure Studies, Material Culture
Studies, Gender Studies, Cultural Geography, Film Studies, Communication,
Philosophy, Visual Arts, Communication Design, and Architecture, or any
other fields that are involved with the interrogation of the themes below.

- The social construction of the visual and the visual construction of the
social
- The visual turn
- The hegemony of the visible
- New media technologies
- The culture of surveillance
- Terrorism and the visual / terrorism of the visual
- Gendered technologies

- Neo-colonialisms
- Space and power
- Third spaces
- Geopolitics and topographies of power
- Psychogeography
- Trauma, pain, identity and memory
- The “work of mourning”
- Repetition of traumatic images via media

- Pain and the unspeakable
- The tourist and leisure gaze
- Visual colonialisms
When submitting your abstract, please indicate in which theme you would like
to be included.
Participants will be invited to submit their papers for refereeing and
publication in the conference proceedings.
