Simultaneous Equations
Site-specific Video and Audio work by Steven Dickie
Commissioned by E m e r g e D for RAW 2004
The work will be the culmination of various aspects of
public space. Situated on Buchanan Street, Glasgow,
the project takes this location as its inspiration.
In an attempt to examine our use and understanding of
public space in its broadest sense Simultaneous
Equations will combine Video, audio, and audience
participation and the internet to produce a moment of
cohesion between these public realms.
The initial material used to produce the work is
imagery associated with Buchanan Street sourced from
the internet with the use of a search engine. This is
material that anyone, anywhere in the world will find
on the web in relation to this location.
These digital images are transformed by altering the
code that produces them. Simple altering 1 or 2
character results in a complete alteration of their
visual language. Some examples of this are included.

This animation will be shown on the Video screen at
the top of Buchanan Street, above the Royal Concert
Hall. It will be shown tomorrow (14.04.04) from 1 - 2
pm. Further to the video, a sound/music piece in 2
halves will be choreographed to play alongside the
video. This audio is written in direct relation to the
imagery being displayed. The code that forms these
images is translated and used to produce a connected
piece of music, the audio being a translated version
of the image and vice versa.
