E m e r g e D, EXTENSION, Glasgow Art Fair
www.emerged.net
15 - 18 April 2004
E m e r g e D are pleased to announce that we will be
exhibiting as part of EXTENSION at the 2004 Glasgow
Art Fair from 15-18 April.
E m e r g e D
Founded in Glasgow in April 2002, E m e r g e D is an
artist-run organisation aiming to promote and enable
up-and-coming artists across a broad range of
disciplines with a fresh focus on site-specific,
context led artwork.
www.emerged.net is the nucleus of the organisation.
The website is used as a networking space, information
portal and archive resource allowing E m e r g e D to
work effectively on both a local and international
level.
E m e r g e D aims to make contemporary art available
to new and diverse audiences through accessible and
inclusive projects in orphaned spaces which engage the
general public in dialogue with the work and the
artist.
EXTENSION
Curated by amy SALES, the E m e r g e D station aims
to present something very different at this year's
event. Five artists have been commissioned to create
temporary interventions in a variety of contexts
within Glasgow city centre:
juliana CAPES
danny HOLCROFT
james HODGSON
jennifer DOUGLAS
lucy GIBSON
The station at EXTENSION has been used as both a hub
to 'advertise' these site - specific events and as an
interpretative space containing documentation and
information on each of the projects. A virtual
version of the station will be launched on our website
on Sunday April 11 2004:
www.emerged.net.
E m e r g e D directly addresses concerns that the
gallery is removed from cultures and contexts and
attempts to re-place contemporary art at the heart of
communities and the experiences of individuals. As
audiences of site-specific work tend to be random, a
key aim of this event is to generate interest in this
particular way of working and to introduce new and
diverse audiences to contemporary artistic practice.

ARTWORKS INFORMATION
juliana CAPES, Pavement Astronomer, moves around
George Square, charting the chewing gum constellations
of the pavements and observing the movements of the
city through her temporary interventions on the city
streets. This act of mapping equates the pavements
with the stars, questioning whether we notice either.
Site - George Square, Glasgow
In Nimbostratus Blue jennifer DOUGLAS works with
thousands of brightly coloured drinking straws to
create a landscape in an orphaned city centre shop
front. The inspiration for the work comes from the
physical geometry of the Campsie Fells, one of
Glasgow's main sources of water.
Site - 53 King Street, Glasgow
With a view to collecting the intangible experience of
the city through conversation, lucy GIBSON will spend
the duration of the Glasgow Art Fair talking to
visitors and making small, intricate origami stars
from strips of Glasgow tourist maps in her piece I can
see the world through the stars....
Site - Glasgow Art Fair, Glasgow
In his process-based work, a preoccupation with
insignificance, danny HOLCROFT highlights the small,
overlooked details of the Charing Cross junction.
HOLCROFT will use himself as a tool to transfer these
trivial experiences to the window of a vacant shop
giving them permanence and
significance.
Site - 18 Woodlands Road, Glasgow
james HODGSON presents the work Mobile, a delicate
addition to the plethora of building detritus
scattered around our city's holes and ditches.
Mobile, placed in an area of negative space beneath
the motorway, is areconfiguration of the reflective
material that punctuates buildings and
developments.
