New Publication: SOCIAL SCULPTURE
Social Sculpture
Art, Performance and Music in Glasgow
A Social History of Independent Practice, Exhibitions and Events since 1971
By Sarah Lowndes
In Social Sculpture, Sarah Lowndes presents a social history charting the emergence of the current visual arts and music scene in Glasgow. Taking its starting point from the early 1970s when, Lowndes observes, alongside the collapse of Scotland's industrial infrastructure and soaring unemployment, there was an undeniable upsurge in grassroots activity in the areas of theatre, literature, art and music production in Glasgow. This history covers the work of both public institutions and grassroots arts initiatives, the emphasis throughout, however, is on artist-led projects, and, in particular, on the under-documented ephemeral projects and events that have bolstered the Glasgow arts scene. Informed by interviews with many key figures including artists Cathy Wilkes, Martin Boyce and Douglas Gordon; curators Katrina Brown and Charles Esche; and Craig Tannock the man behind studios and live music venues such as Tower Studios, The Apollo and the 13th Note.

"Lowndes has created a veritable bible... a fascinating social history, which reveals the longstanding and sometimes long-forgotten links among institutions such as the city's Transmission Gallery, writers such as James Kelman and Tom Leonard and a music scene which spawned bands such as Teenage Fanclub and The Jesus and Mary Chain..."
