Part of your problem is going to be duplicate ticker symbols. After a stock has been delisted for awhile the ticker becomes available again and is reused. For example, there is an old stock that was named QQQQ.

 

CSI Data maintains a database that includes all the delisted symbols. They have added a "CSI Number" to distinguish between such duplicates (and symbol changes too). However, I don't know if they will sell you the list without subscribing to their data. You can always ask.

i could not find anything useful on google and i know there are a few csi believers on this board, could you give me a hint where to find this information?
