Ken,

Your method ( assuming you are doing exactly what you say ) works 
for me ... Are you sure you are doing save as prior to apply ? ... 
As far as insert or insert linked is concerned are you sure you are 
using the right term earlier i.e. Layout ? as opposed to Chart ?
