Thanks very much for your comments, including your mention of the versions that 
are working for you.

Obviously, I was trying to take the recommended all-in-one path first.  Too bad 
for me I'm coming in behind the upgrade curve!

Too bad also that statconn provides no earlier versions of RAndFriends for 
download on their site.  (I'll have to start accumulating those downloads as 
they appear, in case I need an older one in the future.)

Given the version info you've provided, I'll see about putting it all together 
ala carte from the other public sources.

I do suggest that you eliminate the RAndFriends recommendation from the current 
docs, until such time as going that route works again (if ever).  This would 
prevent anyone who misses this discussion from sinking their time into a dead 
end route.
