There are many. With an IMAP accout, anything you do within your eMail client 
is synced with the IMAP server, and vice versa (e. g. creating/deleting 
folders, moving mails, etc).
This especially comes in handy if you use several computers or access your 
eMail via the providers web interface *and* with the eMail client.
